Toledo, Ohio’s self-proclaimed apocalyptic death punks Bone Folder present their latest release Death//Destiny on digital and cassette through Morbid and Miserable Records. Bone Folder, and this latest EP, are the true sound of modern Hardcore. It is fast, brash, crude, heavy, and above all unapologetic. They claim “every note seethes with furious, maniacal energy”, and that couldn’t be more spot on. Pulling from elements of Thrash and Death Metal, combining with blasting D-Beat rhythm and harsh vocals, Bone Folder deliver high energy, aggressive Metal Punk the way it needs to sound.
Death//Destiny opens with a tribute to a major Bone Folder influence, Deaththreat. “Humanity’s Death Wish” is a combination of Deaththreat riffs rearranged into the Bone Folder style and structure. The song slowly brings you in, with a sense of ease. As the main riff and vocals come in, all that ease is ripped away at breakneck speeds. The face-melting solo takes us home as we fade into “Vomit”. Right out of the gate, “Vomit” is heavy and fast. The aggression makes its self known through the chaos. Blink and its over, “Vomit” is short and to the point.
“Alcoholocaust” is nonstop ferocity. The classic Heavy Metal and Thrash guitar sound and riff style is paired with the assaulting delivery of Hardcore Punk. It’s angry, fast, and technically sound. One of the things many people love about Heavy Metal and Thrash is the guitar sound. Chugging and squealing rolled together. “Death//Destiny///Destiny//Death” provides just that. The big guitar sound is again coupled with the hard-hitting and combative Hardcore vocals and percussion in an all out war on the world.
“Parasite” leans more on the punk side of things. The rapid tempo and barking vocals leave any traditional Metal influences behind and jump full force into the gutter. The feedback lead out and lead in to “Killer on the Loose” is a great flow from one style to another. This is an all out onslaught with each part on full attack. The lead guitar is on a high display to end the EP.
Death//Destiny is violent, and savage. It takes the most aggressive aspects of Metal and Punk and threw them into a blender, that was involved in a car crash. One facet is almost indecipherable from the next. In this time of bastardized musical styles, where genres bleed into and viciously combine with others, Bone Folder are just doing things right. Lines cant be crossed if the lines separating genres are blown away entirely. Death//Destiny is available now on Bandcamp and on cassette via Morbid and Miserable Records!
