Joyless Bodies describe themselves as Big & Loud Rock, and live up to it. They take much of their sound from the post-grundge 1990s alt-rock sound, with a little heavy metal and punk rock mixed in. On August 10th, Joyless Bodies released their second EP, titled Lost Gaze. The EP has all the ingredients for a great alt-rock sound.
Right from the start with “Outbreak” the 90s tone is prevalent. Full of chugging riffs and raspy vocals, as if this was plucked from a mid-90s college students record collection. The heavy riff playing stays on for “Damage To Your Space.” But, for the verse, it softens and there are hints of a psychedelic influence. “Neon Lights” is as straight forward alt-rock as it can get. It is full of fuzz, a mix riffs and power chords, and sweeping between calm and heavy.
“Flora” softens things up, and slows down. It fits well into the mix, and gives a good break from the heavier first songs. But, lyrically, it is the most bleak. It flows perfectly into the next song “Restitution.” This song has that unmistakable 90’s alt rock guitar sound. Joyless Bodies found the right right combination of amps, guitars, and effects to hold on to the sounds of the 1990s. To close Lost Gaze, the drumming becomes a highlight. “I’m Hungry” is a short instrumental, with great rhythm and an excellent drum sound.
Lost Gaze is a great callback of an EP. It is perfect for those searching for something new, with a classic sound. Joyless Bodies have a great sound, with great songs, and the ability to reach great heights. A full-length album needs to be in the near future. Lost Gaze is available for streaming on most major services, and for digital download via Bandcamp.
