You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy!
Hailing from Germany, this duo bring sped up sleazy Rock & Roll right out of the heyday of the Sunset Strip. These guys brought together their combined passion for Motörhead, Midnight, and fried chicken into some high energy, gritty, amped up Rock & Roll. The debut album Quick and Dirty, out now, is a combination of their earlier demos remastered, and two new songs. To say this band is majorly influenced by Lemmy and Motörhead is a serious understatement. Tobster has the gravely vocals, uses calls and little quips the way Lemmy did, and the bass is break neck, with all the mids it can handle. In a world without Motörhead, it is great to hear the influence going strong. This is in no way to say that Poisoned Speed are a ripoff, or a copycat either. Each song is unique, and completely their own brand of ass kicking Rock & Roll! Poisoned Speed’s love of heavy music is prevalent throughout these 8 tracks of debaucherous and loud rocking Heavy Metal.
Quick and Dirty with a clip from an interview with infamous cult leader Charles Mansion. While Manson clips and quotes get used relatively often (his insanity and ramblings make great quotes for heavy music), the immediate punch of “Fistfights Under Neon Lights” has the sound clip about being crazy work perfectly. For the song, it drops you right into a dingy club, heavy and fast music with blistering bass playing, and the only way to see is under the neon lights. Great song to use to settle a dispute and right a wrong. While “Fistfights Under Neon Lights” is about how a night usually ends, “Ale Jammer” is all about getting to that point. This is one for cracking open a cold one, shooting it down and going for another. The blusey solo is just right for this heavy Rock & Roll anthem, and the lifestyle that follows it.
“Winner” is short, fast, and to the point. Cocky attitude, and a positive outlook makes this a generally happy song among the gritty, substance fueled rest of the album. The build to the break in creates great anticipation and payoff on “Rebellion of Human Garbage”. This one is a real headbanger. Perfectly constant rhythm and face melting lead guitar smash together to cause the right amount of pain at the base of the neck. “Crash and Burn” is for driving fast and loose. There is no such thing as a brake pedal when “Crash and Burn” comes on. Accelerator to the floor, gasoline guzzling, unrelenting heavy Rock & Roll. “Poison Queen” has a great groove and more blusey lead playing. Excellent creamy tone for the solo. Sleazy lyrics shout out to their ideal Rock & Roll woman, leather and teased hair included, just to be left behind when she moves on.
“Speed Will Succeed” brings back that classic cocky Rock & Roll attitude. “Poisoned Speed will succeed!” This one gives a stiff middle finger to any trash talkers and the “squares” that just don’t get it, or are willing to put in the work to be a full-time band. Poisoned Speed take that last bit to heart. Fame doesn’t come over night, and true Rock & Roll takes time, work, and above all passion. To close, the bands anthem comes ripping in. “Poisoned Speed” opens with blistering bass speed. This dirty rocker is proof that Poisoned Speed is all you need! Steamrolling rhythm gets faster and faster until the clashing end that rightfully leaves you pleasantly exhausted.
Quick and Dirty is just that, quick (just under 25 min total runtime) and dirty (sleazy lyrics, gritty vocals, blistering speed). This is modern Rock & Roll the way it is supposed to be played. Loud, fast, full of attitude, and the life of the party. This album is start to finish, pedal-to-the-metal, tenacious, and sure to piss off the neighbors and leave you wanting more! Quick and Dirty is available now on CD from Morbid and Miserable Records, cassette from Unchained Tapes, with Digital being handled by German label Barhill Records. Downloads and streaming available via Bandcamp and Spotify respectively.
