Throwing Flares by Beatnik Neon review

Sub-Standard Alien is first and foremost honored to have been given the opportunity to listen to and review the latest single by Beatnik Neon. The song is titled Throwing Flares and is set for official release May 2, 2019 on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.).

Throwing Flares starts hauntingly, with somber cello leading to the amazing vocals of Michelle Miears (BLSHS, MIEARs), and continues to build as the beautiful arrangement of instruments lays over it all. With a blend of acoustic and sampled drums, the rhythm keeps your attention and just adds so much depth to that build that just has not let up. Paul Simmons’ drumming is an incredible contribution to the playing and arrangements of Nolan Farmer, brains behind Beatnik Neon.

About halfway through, the build starts again, and the cello playing of Yann Marc, who flew in to Texas from France to record with Beatnik Neon, becomes the focal point. The guitar makes way for piano that accompanies the vocals amazingly, giving an almost experimental jazz feel. Throwing Flares was wonderfully mixed and mastered by Irving Artero

This, and everything Beatnik Neon has done, is like nothing else out there. It is the perfect sound for an eerie, almost uncomfortable scene in a psychological thriller or horror movie. The accompanying artwork provided by @tarakearnsart_ only adds to the eerie, and haunting feel Throwing Flares gives.

While Beatnik Neon is currently working towards an EP, as well as a full length album. Throwing Flares is the first of two released singles for 2019.
