Hailing from La Plata, Argentina, Vanity Mirror released “God’s Wet Dream” in January of 2019. Each track has its own accompanying artwork that complements the muddy, psychedelic doom music it represents. Highlighted samples have been included below.
“God’s Wet Dream” starts with “Cruelty” and its heavily compressed and distorted guitar with droning vocals and flows into the next track “War with Ashes”. The over use of digital effects and tremolo gives this song a deep space feel, but is lyrically a descent into madness. From here, the overall production takes a sharp turn for the better. “Conspiracy of the Knives” is a murky, depressive doom song that ties the band’s tagline “compressed sounds from rained places” in perfectly. At first glance of the title, “Bubblegun”, and without any prior knowledge of the band, or sound, it would be easy to assume it would be an upbeat, if not poppy, song completely unfitting of any of the imagery or genre. However, “Bubblegun” is droning, slow, and muggy, low-fi fuzz. “Persecuted” returns to the space feel as a midway through the album atmospheric instrumental. “Put the Roaches Together” is a pure psychedelic journey into the void through the realm of sleep. Based on the lyrics, “Cannibal Fiend” could very well be a from a horror punk/rock band, but they are sang over slow heavy riffs, with a Monolord or Cough sounding vocal style. The spoken word and tempo pick up for the lead out is a drastic change from the rest of this album, and was a pleasant surprise. To end the album, “For Kurtis” is a slow, dark folk sound with a bluesy lead guitar and the depressive vocal sound found throughout the album.
