Markarian – Event Horizon

In the Fall of 2019, Sub-Standard Alien reviewed the single “We Are The Prophets,” from one-man Prophetic Doom project Markarian. February 28, 2020 the full-length album, Event Horizon was released. This album digs deep into the depths of the Earth, and to the farthest reaches of Space.

Event Horizon opens with “Markarian 355.” it is building and cosmic. Lyrically a Lovecraftian story is told, where “a giant of destruction; a mouth with no face” awaits to destroy those left at the end of the world. Ethereal lead guitar work perfectly sets up the cosmic environment. Next, “Curse” delivers almost chant-like vocals. While each song tells a story, “Curse” is righting a wrong using the powers of the Earth. The exceptional lead guitar playing is again a standout on “Sin.” This song hits on several societal issues, with lyrics such as “Stupidity, with certainty, Must be man’s biggest Sin.”

The softer “Supernova” travels as deep into outer space as possible. This is truly a cosmic entity, and builds to a strong, heavier ending. “We Are The Prohets” as previously reviewed, starts strong and remains steady with its Cosmic Occult sound, and in traditional doom metal fashion, the guitar riffs are at the forefront. “The Crow” is a turn towards a heavier sound. There are gritty, harsher vocals not heard elsewhere on the album.

The title song closes the album. “Event Horizon” is an epic building song, with more great lead guitar playing. Layers of tone, and sludgy riffs play along with haunting vocals. The monster that is the Black Hole ensures all your dreams are consumed.

Prophet Zerhathos has created his ultimate ritual. Answering the void, and releasing its powerful message of magnificent destruction, Event Horizon is an album of cosmic proportions. Event Horizon is available now for digital download on Bandcamp.
